You also have a range of boilers to choose from depending on the fuel source to your home. If you have gas connected then you can have a gas boiler to heat the water for distribution through the pipes. Oil fired boilers are another choice as well as solid fuel options if you have an unlimited supply of firewood. The most cost efficient boiler to use for underfloor heating is the condensing boiler because it provides the most controllable choice. However, a concept designed to use solar-heated water that circulates by thermosiphon is susceptible to blockage by air bubbles. The heating elements in the pipework are thermostatically controlled to ensure that your room received the suitable temperature for your particular living space. The elements can be energised and de-energised depending on the thermostat settings. Another material commonly used is a bronze mesh or screen called ZMesh that is used with Low voltage floor heat systems. The heat that needs to be generated needs only to be slightly above room temperature. It is this feature that makes underfloor heating cost efficient and economical to run. The ideal water temperature is between 45-65 degrees which is much lower than the standard central heating radiator. This temperature will ensure that the floor heat would be between 25 and 29 degrees. In contrast, in-floor radiant heating warms the lower part of both the room and the body because when warm air convects from the radiant floor surface, it loses approximately two degrees Celsius at two meters above the floor. I also disliked the ugly appearance of radiators and because I had young children I had to cover them up with wooden boxes so they would not scald or burn themselves with direct contact. While this safety aspect worked I also found that the boxed covers also had a negative effect on the overall function of the radiator. It was blocking the heat from escaping and thus channelling it through the mesh gaps in the wood. I found I was having to turn up the heating to maximum so that we could receive the benefits and the after affects of this was much higher heating costs every month.

Heating History:

In 1761, Scottish chemist Joseph Black discovered that ice absorbs heat without changing temperature when melting. By employing full lengths of piping without any joints, wet underfloor heating loops are practically maintenance free. In the Roman baths, the furnace was placed next to the hottest room caldarium in which three walls of this room were heated so that the room reached a temperature of up to 120 °F (50 °C).

Heat Methods:

The conventional sign convention is that when a body releases fire into its surroundings, Q < 0 (-); when a body absorbs fire from its surroundings, Q > 0 (+). This is why modern insulation techniques are required to reduce heat loss. The blackbody radiation from earth's surface is absorbed or scattered by the atmosphere. For incompressible substances, such as solids and liquids, there is no distinction among the two expressions as they are nearly incompressible.
